FROM THE
CO-PRESIDENTS
We are off to a
wonderful start in this new year with 50 members and guests attending the
January general meeting. We had a very interesting program on the plans for the
future development of Jackson Square. We owe our thanks to the speaker, Barbara
Ferrell, our program chair Connie Battle, our hospitality committee including
Nita Barnes, Joanne King, Mary Uziel, and many others who helped to make the
meeting a success.
Our members continue to nurture each other through
group activities. Our new member Karen Fuhrman is in the process of forming a
new interest group for Arts and Crafts. In addition to this we have a Book
Group and an Epicurean Group. The Gourmet food group meets regularly to share
good food and support each other. Likewise, the Lunch Bunch meets to share food
and friendship. New members are welcome, and so are long-term members who want
to explore new things. Please contact the leaders of these groups for more
information.
Karen is an example to us---she joined just this past
year; and, in addition to the interest group she is forming, she contributed
all of the cookies for the Green Tea. She is working with Mayme Crowell as a
RSCC Liaison. She also attends our open board meetings.
All of our
officers and interest group leaders have been working very hard. In May our
organization will be deciding on our officers for the coming year. To this end,
we are in the process of forming the nominating committee. We hope that you
will consider serving on this committee if called. We also invite you to
participate in our open board meetings.
The state convention is going
to be on April 17th in Chattanooga this year. We encourage our members to
attend and to donate auction items to Mayme Crowell to take to the convention
auction. AAUW will be involved with Equal Pay Day April 20; women still earn 77
cents for every one dollar earned by their male counterparts.
Our
program for our next general meeting on February 22nd is "What You Need to Know
about Bankruptcy" presented by Ann Mostoller, attorney in Oak Ridge. We hope to
see you there, and feel free to bring guests.
Happy Valentine's Day to
you and your families! ----Co-Presidents, Sophy Littrell and Donna von der
Lage
ARTS AND CRAFTS GROUP
ORGANIZING: Interested in arts or crafts? Willing to create something new or
share a talent? Members interested in an Arts Group will meet on March 1 at
10:00 a.m. to discuss possibilities and organize a new group that will focus on
creating arts/crafts projects. Some arts to consider are needlecraft, wearable
jewelry, culinary, decorative home, kid-friendly crafts, and "traditional"
media. BRING IDEAS! ALL are welcome! Hostess: Donna von der Lage, 31 Palisades
Parkway (220-0143) Leader: Karen Fuhrman (kfuhrman@heartoftn.net)
DONATIONS FOR ADFAC
(Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties): Please continue to bring
items for the ADFAC Crisis Cupboard to our General Meetings. Most needed are
necessities not covered by food stamps: toiletries and basic personal hygiene
items, shampoo, deodorant, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, toilet
paper, paper towels, diapers, and laundry detergent. Wanda Newcome (482-9343)
chairs this AAUW project.
WOMEN'S HISTORY
MONTH: March is Women's History Month and the board decided to have a display
this year at the Library. Virginia Jones and her committee are coordinating
this effort. Remember to look for our AAUW display when you visit the Oak Ridge
Public Library during March.
SILENT AUCTION TO
BENEFIT LAF AND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FUND: A Silent Auction at our State
Convention in Chattanooga on April 17 will benefit the Educational
Opportunities Fund (formerly EF) and the Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF). Hopefully
each Branch can contribute. Items, such as CDs, DVDs, specialty baskets,
homemade crafts, etc, should be brought to the State Convention. It would be
helpful if the Branch would e-mail Mayme Crowell, Development Chairperson, at
crowellmr@comcast.net with the items being contributed along with their
estimated values. She can then prepare the paperwork for our Silent Auction.
Together we can raise funds for these worthwhile AAUW endeavors--Educational
Opportunities and Legal Advocacy. Thanks in advance to each AAUW member for
assisting in this worthwhile project. ----AAUW TN Development Chairperson,
Mayme Crowell
